The town I grew up in…

Posted in Life, the Universe and All that Jazz at 5:19 pm by Meg

Anyone hear of the flooding on the East Coast?

This is the house next to the house that I grew up in. My dad actually owned it as well and our horseback riding ring was on the flat area next to it. If you go back a couple of pictures you’ll see more of the house. My step-mom holds the mortgage on it. It’s kind of unsettling.

Tracy Creek

If you look at pictures 6 and 7, you’ll see that the water actually was 4′ over it’s banks. Normally, the water is only a couple of feet deep in the spring even though the banks are about 9 or 10 ft. high.

Edited later: Oops, I should have said where these are from.

At least out here, all we’re hearing about is the flooding around DC.  Hubby saw a reference to my home town in NY and I went out to check it out and found out how bad upstate NY and Pennsylvannia are doing. My home town is a place called Vestal.  The easiest way to describe it is to find where I-81 crosses the NY/PA border.  The city there is Binghamton; Vestal is the town just to the west.

They are on the Susquehanna River (which goes down through Harrisburg, PA and empties into the Chesapeake Bay).  At it’s peak last week, the Susquehanna River was about 14 feet over flood stage.   This little creek is just one of many that went over it’s banks.

Blah!!

It’s like this….

Do I get some sleep, or clean up the pool, or unpack the rest of the boxes, or prep what’s left of Boy’s school work, or help Girl get ready for fair, or reconnect with friends here, or cook, or do some leatherwork for myself, or play the piano, or read, or read blogs, or get my photography and leatherwork ready for the open show, or help Boy get stuff ready for fair, or spend time with hubby, or clean the fool house, or take a walk in the woods, or write something on my blog, or do laundry, or write notes to friends that I’m missing, or go grocery shopping, or plan what we are doing for Boy’s birthday, or  …..

I am not a real happy camper right now.

No, it’s not for one of mine

I just thought I’d share.

Jace's cake

Dear friends are celebrating their son’s first birthday today and I made them the cake. I’m not going to post a picture of the poster that M made to put up, but the cake matches the the poster’s background and while the lettering is different, the colors are the same.

I’ve been making cakes for M and D for a couple of years now. It started when they got married. We had gone up to Niagara Falls with them for the ceremony, and they were talking about a cake for the reception they were planning for when we got back home. D loved chocolate cake; but when they had had their unity ceremony a few years before, the bakery had told them that chocolate cake and white icing didn’t work. I ended up making them the cake for their wedding reception. And now D asks for my chocolate cake whenever she gets a chance. (Though this time, knowing how busy I am right now, they didn’t ask, I offered.)

I picked this up from *Scrappitydoodah* and thought it was a great idea ’cause I wonder too.

Dear Person Who Has Landed in this Blog,

Please leave a comment if you are a secular homeschooler.

I have no ulterior motive, other than assuaging my curiosity as to how many non-religious homeschoolers are out there.

If you are a refugee from a certain other homeschool blogging site, I’m curious about that, too.

For the record, I ‘knew’ Ron and Andrea before Homeschool Journal.

BTW, for me ’secular’ means two things.  You teach (or will be teaching) evolution and you don’t teach bible studies as part of your daily activities.
