Girl is in 7th Grade

Posted in The nuts and bolts of it at 12:57 am by Meg

Well, she finally made up her mind. She is staying home. YEAH!!!

Anyway, Hubby, her and I sat down and worked out what she’s doing this year.

Math - We discussed a few different options and then left the choice up to her. She wants to go right into Algebra 1 even if it puts her ahead of the norm and may be trouble if she decides to go back to ps next year. We’ll be using the Bellman et. al. text published by Pentice Hall.

Science - I really like the middle-school series by Pentice Hall titled Science Explorer, at least the older ones from about 6 years ago. They come either in little books covering each individual section or 3 larger books (Physical, Life and Earth). Some people like to focus on one book each year, but we bounce around and do a little of each, each year. This year will focus most heavily on the Life Science book.

History - We’ll be finishing the world cultural history book that we started last year. It’s called World, Adventures in Time and Place and published by Glenco/McGraw-Hill. It will be heavily augmented with outside readings to make it interested. We’ll be picking it up in the Middle-ages which will tie in great with a planned trip to the Ohio Ren-Fair in September.

English - She is also working her way through the Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes literature anthologies; she’s on the second volume. For grammar and writing, she’ll be doing World of Language and she’ll also be doing Everyday Spelling. She’ll also have a reading list to pick and choose books from. Reminds me, I still need to update that list to this local library’s selections.

Art - She’ll be joining her brother with Art in Focus. Though I am trying to get another mom in our local group to open up a high school art class to younger kids. At this point the mom is adament that she doesn’t want to.

French - ditto her brother.

Russian - we will be continuing on with Russian: Face to Face, Level 1 that we started last year.

Japanese - Yeah, you read that right. The idea of Latin has been dropped for Japanese. A friend in New Mexico got her interested and she’s been trying to pick it up (a little) on her own. I think part of the drive is to be able to read some manga untranslated. Anyway, we are going to try NTC’s Basic Japanese, Level 1. Please have pity for me. I’m really not into languages.

What else - She’ll also be involved with the Shakespeare drama thing and I think she may participate in the local elementary/middle-school co-op. The group has been trying different things and their current plan has 3 people teaching 3 classes. For families that don’t want to help teach, it’ll cost a couple of bucks a month for your kid to participate. I’m not figuring that she’ll get a lot out of the classes, but she wants to get out of the house more and this will do that. The first 3 classes are: Nutrition, Am. History, and Language arts.

That just about covers her except that we still need a decision on riding lessons or more dance.

Well while Girl decided to stay home Big B just announced to me this morning that he wants to go back to PS again because he is “bored”. I give up!

I wish I could be as smart and organized as you. If I tried to use actual texts with the kids I’m not sure who would have more trouble…them or me. lol.

I’ll email you back in a few girl and try to call you this weekend.
