Not there yet

My plane out of Indy was delayed because of mechanical problems in Detroit. I’m now sitting in an hotel by the Minneapolis airport.  I think I will count this night as part of my travels.

Now I won’t reach my sister’s place (hopefully) until nearly 5 PM mountain time, or 22 hours since I left my home.  Remember, I said driving was only 27 hours!

Going to the boonies

I’m traveling from 1 point in the continental US to another point.  How long do you think traveling ’should’ take me?

Not counting the time for spending the night in Spokane and assuming that it’ll only take me 30 mins. to aquire my luggage, pick up a rental car and leave the airport, this is what I’m looking at for getting to my sister’s:

  1. Home to airport here - 1 hour
  2. Wait at airport - 1 hour
  3. Flights with1 one hour stop - 5 hours
  4. Pick up luggage and car - 30 mins.
  5. Sleep in Spokane because I’m landing at 10:30 PM
  6. Drive to sister’s house - 3 hours.

So, not counting the night, it’s going to take me nearly 11 hours of travel time (by plane) to get to my sister’s house.  Mapquest says that driving will only take 27 hours.  If I had another driver it would nearly make sense.

The trip home is almost as long, but won’t include the stop to sleep.

About a month ago I posted about my brother-in-law. For anyone who wondered, he passed away this morning in his sleep. In his own house with my sister and their son with him.

He is to be cremated and then his ashes will be spread on their property in north-western Montana.

I’m going up to spend the weekend with her and will probably be the only person from ‘our’ family to make it. Our other sister is currently in Australia and won’t be back home for another week. I don’t think either of us expected it to go this fast.

She’s so cute, but will I survive?

Girl is 12,

she gets along well with her brother. A couple of years ago the two of them made some friends who were also older brother/younger sister pairs and the 6 kids started doing things together. When they started getting together the boys all played Magic while the girls did whatever. Then they got into D&D and everyone plays. Well by this point, there were a few extra older boys hanging out with the group.

So now the group runs 2 or 3 girls with 5 to 7 boys. Because of the distances involved with some of these friendships, most D&D nights end up being mixed-gender sleepovers. They get together mid-to-late afternoon, play/hang out until about 2 AM and then crash, when they get up in the morning, they’ll usually play some more until parents start arriving to get them. (The girls do go off to a bedroom to sleep.)

Having hung out with her brother’s friends so much (they play a couple of times a month), Girl is very comfortable with her brother’s friends. They are all in the drama class that I’m doing on Tuesdays, and Girl also sees some of the younger boys at co-op on Thursdays. Fridays they all get together again for gym. She also does the Tuesday night engineering classes at the local college with a couple of them.

Well, for the last couple of weeks she has been inseparable from J. He’s the youngest of Boy’s group of friends and is actually only about 18 months older than Girl. The fascination appears to run both ways. J has a Green Day baseball cap that he wears all the time and anymore, when they are together, Girl is wearing it. Today, for co-op, J showed up wearing a cat bell chocker - very much like the ones that Girl is apt to wear. It has J’s mom and I in stitches.

No, I haven’t been posting much lately. Life is extremely hectic and trying to write anything for here, has been very low on my list. Hey, I’m a slow writer - I can’t just spend 5 mins. typing something quick.

Anyway, we just got from a trip to Upstate NY for a family wedding. PA060107The weather was beautiful and we had a great time. We spent Saturday morning taking Tochter to Niagara Falls and over into Canada (the better view!!) and then had lunch with Hubby’s sister before going over to Rochester. The ceremony was on Sunday afternoon and we had a great time visiting with family.

Friday, before we left, our homeschool group did it’s annual fall trip to a pumpkin farm. PA050026 We have a couple to choose from and the kids wanted this huge climbing structure 100_6286 so badly that they organized a petition to get the moms to change where we had planned on going. With them so motivated, we had to change our plans and go.

Here’s some more pics from Niagara Falls. PA060084 Now we’ve ridden these boats before, PA060077 but I’d sure not like to be on them PA060113 in October. Even if the temps are in the 70s!

Since I also have some seasonal pictures that I really like, you get a few more to look at.

PA050004 This is behind our neighbor’s house. I love the trees when they are just starting to change.

I took this one at the pumpkin farm. I just liked the colors.PA060041

Our Rose of Sharon bush is still blooming. It has huge flowers, but I end up removing so many baby plants.PA050007 (ours came from a neighbor’s plant and we missed removing them while they were little.)
