University of Chicago

What do you do when your child misplaces their glasses?

Girl is putting us through that mental loop today. She had her glasses with her to Chicago on Tuesday (she wears contacts, but I wanted her glasses along in case she needed to take the contacts off - we were gone for 20 hours). But we aren’t sure that anyone has seen them since we got home. It’s possible she had them on Wednesday before she showered, but where are they?

She’s currently ripping her room apart trying to find them. Grrr.

So, the day in Chicago -

Parking at the University of Chicago is a royal pain. We found one, but it took looping around one-way streets and finally wiggling into the smallest parking lot (with the smallest spaces) that I’ve ever seen. Hubby then took Girl and her friend, H, off to the college bookstore while Boy and I headed over to admissions.

The place was packed. It turns out that they were about to give a tour and asked if he wanted to postpone his interview and go on the tour. Given that he’s been on and off college campuses his entire life and we had been on the Chicago campus a few years ago, he opted to just do the interview.

I didn’t get to sit in - not a big surprise. It was interesting to see Boy pick up the New York Times to read while we waited. He does read parts of it regularly but I suspected, and he later admitted, that he chose that to make the ‘right’ impression on the counselor.

Boy had brought with him an updated copy of his transcript and his course description printout. Not to give to the counselor per se, but to have in case she wanted some information off it since they don’t have a completed application from Boy yet.

I guess they talked about a mix of things - our plans for the day in Chicago, some of the books that he had read over the years. Boy did say that she was slightly confused by the fact that we hadn’t used any preset curriculum, but did finally get the idea at the end.

He came out feeling good about the talk. Chicago is a little of a long-shot for him. Especially since their economics department is very competitive. (Hey, they have a couple of Nobel prize winners in economics as professors!) He does have going for him that he’s a legacy, my father received all his degrees from Chicago. On the flip-side what will control from our end is whether they’ll give him much aid. But, at least he now has an interview under his belt.
