Paradise Found had an interesting point in her last comment. I hadn’t realized that Sprittibee or any of her helpers could even be in the Homeschool Blog Awards.
Now when SpunkyHomeschool started the Blog awards it (supposedly) was just a pat on the back that you were ‘winning’, but that’s not the case anymore. The site now crows about how the participants are going to be winning over $1000 in prizes! (and that’s from Vision Forum alone, not to mention other sponsors.) I can’t link to the ‘crow,’ but it’s currently on the left sidebar.
Umm, Doesn’t that mean they need to abid by each state’s rules for contests? I don’t know, but while they aren’t fundraising with the contest, it certainly is no longer playing for a neat badge and at pat.
So, I went looking to see. I came up pretty dry.
I did come up with this for comparison:
From a LiveJournal contest we have pages and pages of legal BS (I’ll copy it out down below for comparison, or you can follow the link.)
Well, I suppose it doesn’t matter………
To make it a little easier to compare, I’ve put both sets of rules into the same size font.
HSB’s rules as of Nov. 27, 2007
1. Please use THIS FORM to nominate – it sends your nominations directly to the HSBAwards Email Account. Don’t email one of the HSBAwards Team Members on their private email. We want to have a record of every nomination to ensure that things are fair.
2. Please read the rules (and updated/clarified rules) and category descriptions before you nominate and please nominate only bloggers who are actively homeschooling grades PK-12 for at least part of 2007.
3. Please only nominate ONE BLOG PER CATEGORY.
4. You may make all of your nominations at the same time with this form.
5. PLEASE include the blog’s URL. We will not accept nominations that do not include URLS (web address of the blog).
6. You don’t have to nominate someone for every category. If you don’t know someone to nominate for each – just leave it to those who know best for that category. Don’t just pick someone to pick someone. We want carefully thought-out and personal nominations so that the really good blogs get a better chance at winning.
7. If you are nominating the Best Geographical Homeschool Blog, please let us know WHERE the blogger is! We will not accept nominations for that category if YOU don’t tell us what geographical area the blog is representing.
8. You may nominate yourself.
9. If your blog violates the rules (no cussing, no photographic nudity, your blog must be a homeschool-related blog), you will not be added to the nomination list. Only family friendly (G-rated) blogs, please!
10. To make it to the voting stage, a blog must be nominated for a certain category by THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE. The reason for this is due to the loooong list of nominees last year. We have 23 categories and we want to keep the list manageable so that everyone has time to view all the blogs before voting. We feel that if a blog is a decent blog, it should have at least three loyal readers!
11. In case you need to refer back to the Categories, they can be found here:
12. Don’t obsess. Don’t stay up until your eyes feel like rubber and your back is tingling. This is supposed to be fun… not work (except for me)!
** UPDATE ** Nominations will be accepted from November 5th- 17th. Voting for these nominations will begin on Friday December 3rd and end on December 15th. YOU WON’T GET TO SEE THE NOMINATION LIST UNTIL ALL NOMINATIONS ARE FINAL.

IV. Prize Judging
There will be one (1) Grand Prize winner and two (2) Runner-up Prizes winner selected from the Submissions received by Sponsor in response to each weekly question. The decisions of the judges will be final and judging will take place at Sponsor’s corporate offices.
Each Grand Prize winner and Runner-up Prize winner will then be selected out of the resulting top five Submissions through a non-random selection process in which the resulting top five Submissions will be voted on through an online poll voting system that will be accessible to the public on at least one of the Promotion Sites. This voting will open on the eighth day after the close of the corresponding Question Eligibility Period at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) and will close at 11:59:59 p.m. PST seven (7) days later.
