Getting into college
This article from the WSJ is very intimidating when it comes to thinking about next year. Some of the colleges that Boy is applying to are the ones accepting very low percentages of the applicants.
…especially given Brown’s record-low acceptance rate of about 13.5% last year. “A 14% acceptance rate isn’t a good statistic,” she says. “If someone said you had a 14% chance of living, that’s nowhere near being reassured.”
And of course, no matter how hard we work as his parents to make sure everything is filled in and submitted correctly, we do not have the relationship with a college that school counselors enjoy.
Still, many parents enroll their kids in private schools for the trump card that top prep schools have long held: the powerful, highly connected college counselor. The college counselors at many private schools have spent years building relationships with college admissions offices.
Of course, the flip side is that these schools are also looking to make sure that the ‘interest’ groups have enough kids that are interested in them to continue. So, hopefully an independent minded, martial artist that is interested in both theatre and Magic: The Gathering and D&D and has a good transcript and test scores will be someone they will be interested in rounding out their campus.

Our daughter applied to several colleges. She was awarded a wonderful scholarship to the New School University in NYC.
One can get a decent education through whatever path one chooses—it’s kind of up to us.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas
