My baby is leaving today

Posted in Life, the Universe and All that Jazz at 9:02 am by Meg

No, not my big baby. LOL, that’s not for nearly a month.

Girl is off today to spend 9 days with one of her friends. I’m dropping her off at their house in Indy this afternoon, and then they are leaving for North Carolina tomorrow. We won’t see her again until next Sunday!

She is very excited. I’m worrying about all the little details.

  • She’s not great about sun screen and burns easily - I’m concerned she’ll fry the first day and then not stop and get really badly burned.
  • While the pool where they are going has a life guard, the lake doesn’t - I know she’s a fine swimmer, but…who wouldn’t worry?
  • She and M have known each other for 4 or 5 years, but this will be the longest time they’ve spent together….and Girl gets very, very cranky if she doesn’t get enough sleep - will they still be talking by the end of the week?

AND NOW I HAVE TO DO THE KITTY LITTER EVERY DAY!!

Bah, face it, I’m going to miss not having her around. She’s going to have a great time and I’ll fret for the entire week.

I understand how you feel. I’ve only let the boys do one over-nighter…and this is at the home of our best friends in town whom we trust completely (their kids and our kids are best friends too). I hear about all the sleepovers other kids have and I just can’t imagine letting my kids do that just yet (10 and 12 are their ages).

LOL about your kitty litter comment!

My 11-year-old daughter went to sleep-away camp a couple of weeks ago for the first time ever, and I had some of the exact same worries you mentioned. I lost count of the number of times I reminded her to slather on the sunscreen and drink plenty of water. And not to eat her self sick from sweets, and to get enough sleep, and to remember that 8 girls in a cabin can get catty, so to let things go when she could… :)

She did fine. No sunburn, no sick tummy, no major hassles. I was sure glad to have her home, though.

I hope she has a good time. I hope Mom doesn’t worry too much. She’ll be fine.

Thomas goes away to summer camp next week. Gulp. I’m sure I’ll have a fret post, too.

At least my DH does the cat box, so I won’t need to worry about that. lol

This is one of those things where I’m a bit of an out lier. Tigger has been going away and having sleepovers since she was 2, I think. Her grandmother used to take her for the weekend. And she would sleepover with a friend overnight. She’s been going to a sleep-away camp since she was 7. I don’t worry at all. Not sure why.

But one thing I do know about that kind of thing is that it is really dependent on the personality of your kid (and of you). So there is no one right way to go with this. If you haven’t felt comfortable with this until now, there are probably good reasons. But I bet she’ll be just fine. (Though sometimes kids have to learn some things the hard way. Like why sunscreen is important.)

oh, she’s done sleepovers for years - even multinight ones - and 4H trips that were gone a couple of nights.

It’s just that this time she’s 11 hours away.

She’ll be fine. I’m not even expecting any homesickness from her. I’ll just fret.

Ah. I’m also the mom who put her 8 year old on a train to Toronto (4.5 hour journey) by herself to be picked up by grandparents. She flew home from the UK by herself when she was 9. I love my kid and love having her around, but I don’t really miss her or worry about her when she isn’t here. Like I said, I’m an outlier.
