2008 in Review

Carrie had a neat idea of posting a link to the first post of each month as a way of reviewing her past year.  So, I decided to give it a shot.

January 1 was a meme, so I decided to skip right over to the first “real” post. (Already bending the rules)

January 6 – I HATE being sick!

Yeah, I was sick for most of break, pretty much end of story.  Hubby had left for a conference without us (to San Diego!) and I was hoping that we’d all go to one in Boston later in the year instead (we didn’t).

February 1 – SNOW!!

A picture based post.  We rarely get enough snow to really play in, but when we do, the sleds come out and we all meet up at the one place in town we can use them (hey, it’s the Midwest!).  The best situation for us is when it happens, but the ps kids are still tied up in classes.  Then the message goes out and we race to the park.  This time we had about 20 kids and lots of fun.

March 3 was a notice about signing up for Pizza Hut’s Book-it program, so I’ll skip it.

 March 4 – DST – the discussion continues…

For anyone who wasn’t aware of, prior to just a year or two ago, Indiana didn’t change their clocks – weird, I know.  When they started changing them, it appeared to expose the costs involved in using daylight savings time  (instead of savings) but the utility company came back with an explanation on why you shouldn’t directly compare them.

April 1 – We’re home

From a quick campus visit to UPitt and then up to Rochester to visit Hubby’s family.

May 1 – I HATE freaking weak ankles!!

Ow!  I remember that.  It hurt for nearly 2 months and I was nearly ready to see the doctor about what was going on.  I don’t think I’ve ever hurt it that badly before.

June 2 – And the end…

Boy was finished and there’s pictures.  It’s hard to believe that was half a year ago.

July 1 – I need someone to explain this to me

A bumper sticker that always comes out to me differently than I think what they want to say.  Any new thoughts?

August 2 – Ready and waiting

Datter was due to arrive and I was a tad bit nervous on how well it would work out this year. Now halfway through, it’s been a roller coaster at times, but seems to be positive overall.

September  1 – Virtual Dissections

Another short, short post passing on some links to virtual dissections resources.

October 1 – Penny Girl

Girl got rid of her penny collection after years of grabbing any penny that came anywhere near her.  I haven’t looked if she’s been refilling her piggy bank.

November 1 -The aftermath, or why nothing special is happening at our house today…

The day after a double-header Halloween Party and about all I could do was veg and talk about it.  I was wiped.  But the kids had fun (and later I found out that Girl had barely won the Guitar Hero playoff.)

December 1-  It SNOWED!

We have not had snow on the ground this early in the near decade that we’ve been living here.  It was worth noting and I was hoping for a white Christmas – right.  The weather has been totally whacked.

And that’s the year.  For whatever reason, most of the posts are very short – I know that there were more interesting ones in there.  But Carrie’s rules were to take the first post of the month, so that’s what you got.   My year end total number of posts was nearly 350!

Friday/Saturday – somewhere in there – we had hours and hours of pounding rain.  We didn’t have any thunder storms though there were some nearby.

Come Sunday, I was driving down to the mall area to catch a movie with the girls and we were greeted by this sight.

Now on Sunday, the water was nearly on the pavement (though when we took these on Monday afternoon it had gone down a little)

All I can figure is that the ground under it subsided, though someone was trying to blame it on beaver dams built inside the pipe.  (you can’t really see it, but the bottom of the pipe is full of branches and stuff.)

The only way that works for me, is if it caused the water to back up and start washing out around the pipe (causing the subsidence)

All I can figure is the engineers are going SHOOT!!

Here’s the local news’s take on it.

you see, my mil will enjoy this comic.

Think of me as Dewey and her as the library patron…but I say yes

and since we’re here, we had a wonderful Christmas.  I gave Hubby a new stand for his TV (and put it together because in our house, nearly all projects that involve building things -are mine.  He gets any and all chemical projects, which I think is fair.)  I took me a while to find what I wanted – large enough to hold his TV, and all the assorted boxes that goes with it,  taller than normal to be visible over his computer, and lighter weight.  The only thing missing are wheels – he puts his TV in front of a storage closest that I occasionally need to get it.

He got me a new sewing machine. My old one that I sewed all this and this on, isn’t too old, but it’s suppose to self-thread.  HA!  After 5 years of listening to me fuss at it, he decided a new one was called for.   I’m looking forward to find a project to do on it.

The kids got the usually odd and ends of stuff and I think I FINALLY found a dog toy that Hunter can’t destroy in an hour – it’s made from fire hose and both squeakers are still working.  She usually gets the squeakers within an hour and cracks tennis balls in an afternoon.  Fool mutt.

And I’m back off to enjoying my family.

  • Changes

I’ve been talking about our real-life changes and with moving and all I suspect that that I’ll be fairly quiet for the next couple of weeks.
But I’m also considering a virtual move.  Ron and Andrea have been wonderful, but for a couple of reasons I’m contemplating moving my blog to another site.

Remember last month when I said that Parts of our Town need to wake up?
In my running around this morning, I went past that church.
