Thanksgiving means giving thanks III

Posted in Meme at 12:16 am by Meg

For parts one and two, follow the links.

I am thankful ….

1. That I have finished processing my Dad’s papers and pictures.  It was an amazing experience going through all his stuff and learning more things about him, but it kind of buried me for a few days. Except for the final dealing with the pictures (both of my sisters would like me to give them some) it’s time to put it all behind me - and I’m ready.

2. That Boy will be home almost exactly a week from this posts.  It’s only a quick Thanksgiving visit, but it will be nice to see him and have him here for a few days.  Before he flies back out to his “life” and the end of the term.

3. That Girl thinks nothing of “playing” with her mother.  Wednesday, because of the high school not being clear on their schedule (again), I wasn’t there on time to get her (I thought she wouldn’t be ready for another 10 mins!!) and was treated to crank phone calls from her cellphone (yeah, she blocked the number).

4. For my Mother-in-law because while she has never met Dater, she was more than happy to make her a present for her birthday.  A Christmas stocking like the ones we have, so she’ll have it for Christmas morning.

5. For my Hubby, who works long, long hours and yet is willing to be chased out of his livingroom for a group of my friends to sit around and talk all evening, when he probably just wants to sit and read his newspapers for a bit.

Thanksgiving means giving thanks II

Posted in Meme at 12:07 am by Meg

Go back here, if you don’t remember what this is about.

I am thankful..

1.  That I’m having the opportunity to sort through these boxes, both to find and understand the things from my childhood that my dad valued enough to keep (I haven’t mentioned some of the stuff I’ve found - old newspaper clippings, school work, report cards) and to understand him a little better than I did.

2.  That my oldest child is dealing with registration for next semester and has decided he needs MORE things going on in his life - so he’s added an extra class to make his load 18 credits.  So he’ll have 5 classes, plus a lab for one of them, plus the internship at the paper, plus a ballroom dancing class.  And this is on top of his movie making, soccer playing, and social life.  I’m beginning to think that the child is too much like his mother.

3.  That my youngest child has her own friends to do things with.  So often over the years, she shared friends with her brother, that it was hard to see whose friend, was whose.  With him gone, the group of kids she hangs out with by choice has changed.

4. That aside from chronic issues (like Boy’s Crohns) that will never go away, our family is generally healthy.  I’ve just had one friend bring her husband home from a week in the hospital from diverticulitius, and they are looking at surgery.  Another friend had to take her boys to see their father (her ex) at the hospital because while he has chronic issues, he had taken a serious downturn (he pulled out) and when I spoke to her on Wednesday she was running her mom to the hospital.  I appreciate our general health and the continued good health of our extended family.

5. That I married the man I did.  He has never shied away  from doing the”right” thing and while we have seen that passed to Boy over the years, we are now beginning to see Girl also stepping up and speaking out (yeah Doc, another one). He has always been willing to be a lightning rod and that makes it very natural to stand up to idiots of all stripes.

Come back next Thursday for 5 more.

If you saw me…

Posted in Meme at 4:05 pm by Meg

If you saw ME in a police car, what would you think I got arrested for?

Answer me, then post to your own journal and see how many crimes you get accused of.

(Okay, two memes in a row are normally too much, but I can’t wait to see your answers.)

From Robyn.

Long Food Meme

Posted in Meme at 11:21 am by Meg

From Carrie. She calls it insanely long…

What’s the last thing you ate? a bagel with cream cheese

What’s your favorite cheese?  cheddar - I know, I’m boring

What’s your favorite fish? salmon

What’s your favorite fruit?  apples - like I said, I’m boring

When, if ever, did you start liking olives?  I don’t like olives, never have

When, if ever, did you start liking beer?  hmm,  when I was 13, for my birthday my friends and I took a beer out of the refrigerator and took it out with us to where we were sleeping in the hay mow.  Three of us and we didn’t finish it.  But I was drinking beer by the time I was 16 or 17. (Remember the drinking age was 18 at the time.)

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I can’t remember not liking and eating shrimp.  My junior year at Syracuse, so about 20 yo.  I was dating a guy, whose family had a humongous party for Fourth of July, and they introduced me to steamed clams.

What was the best thing your parent/s used to make?  hmm,  my mom was an amazing cook.  Dad used to tease her that she needed to open her own restaurant.  For the best thing, I’d be torn between spaghetti sauce, lasagna (both of which I make her way), or baked macaroni and cheese (which no one here likes, so I haven’t even tried to make in years).

What’s the native specialty of your home town?  oh, that’s easy if you mean the town I basically grew up in, Spiedies!  If you mean here - nothing.

What’s your comfort food?  Just about anything?  hmm,  probably something with noodles.

What’s your favorite type of chocolate?  I have to pick one?  Milk chocolate then.

How do you like your steak?  medium rare, but not so rare that the center is raw.

How do you like your burger?  medium rare, cooked with onions, garlic, and Worcester sauce, and then served in a bun with melted American cheese, catchup, and mustard.

How do you like your eggs? scrambled

How do you like your potatoes? I can’t think of any way I don’t like potatos - though I guess my favorite is twice baked.

How do you take your coffee? I don’t drink coffee, never have

How do you take your tea? hot, green tea with mint

What’s your favorite mug? One A got me years ago, it has books and cats on it.

What’s your cookie of choice? homemade - chocolate chip or snickerdoodles, from the store - Oreos

What’s your ideal breakfast? fresh made ham and cheese omelet or French toast with orange juice to drink

What’s your ideal sandwich? either roast beef, swiss, and mayo on whatever kind of bread, or ham and swiss, with brown mustard on a lightly toasted bagel.

What’s your ideal pizza (topping and base)? a hand tossed crust, seasoned with garlic, and topped with sauce, cheese, ham and pineapple - of course almost no one I know around here likes that, so I end up with mushroom and pineapple (sister P or when Boy’s friends split a few pizzas) or pepperoni (nearly most of the time) or cheese (the remaining time)

What’s your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?  homemade apple pie or pumpkin - I can never make up my mind.

What’s your ideal salad? a chef salad

What food do you always like to have in the fridge?  milk, orange juice, soda (coke and diet pepsi), lunch meat, Hawaiian Punch….

What food do you always like to have in the freezer? beef and chicken, bread, bagels, spaghetti sauce…

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? Bread, pretzels, poptarts, pasta, dove chocolates …

What spices can you not live without? Basil, chopped onion and garlic, ginger, thyme, cinnamon….

What sauces can you not live without?  That I make?  spaghetti sauce and alfredo sauce.  That I buy? soy sauce, worcester sauce, rice wine, sesame oil….

Where do you buy most of your food? lately I’ve been really split.  I buy fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and bagels from a local store, Baesler’s (they are the BEST).  I buy most everything else at Kroger’s except that I buy soda, pizza dough mix, and granola bars from Walmart. And I’ll buy “ran out and need it now” items where ever is easiest.

How often do you go food shopping? I used to be on a one day a week schedule, and it’s been long gone.  I’m beginning to think that Baesler’s thinks we stop there everyday (either Hubby or I)

What’s the most you’ve spent on a single food item? I have no idea, but it was probably20 some dollars for a turkey.

What’s the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own? That we bought and didn’t come with the house?  the frig.

What’s the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? a rice cooker - and I should have done it sooner!

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? my large appliances?

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients?  nearly every day.

What’s the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? homemade pizza last night

What’s your favorite thing to make for yourself? chilli, because no one else like it.

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey? lamb, venison, rabbit, buffalo, elk (maybe?)

What’s the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? no idea

What’s the last time you ate something you’d picked in the wild? no idea

Place the following cuisines in order of preference (greatest to least) - Italian, sushi, Chinese, French, Indian, Thai: Italian, French, Chinese, Thai, Sushi, Indian

Place the following boozes in order of preference (greatest to least) - Whiskey, tequila, vodka, brandy, gin, rum: I have no idea, except that brandy would be last and tequila just above it.

Place the following flavors in order of preference (greatest to least) - Garlic, ginger, basil, aniseed, lime: garlic, basil, ginger, lime, aniseed

Place the following fruits in order of preference (greatest to least) - cherry, apple, orange, pineapple, watermelon: apple, cherry, orange, pineapple, watermelon - and that could change in 5 mins.

Bread and spread: egg bagel (and around here, that’s impossible to find) with cream cheese

What’s your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? Steak and Shake - small vanilla milk shake, onion rings or cheese fries, chicken sandwich or a club.

What are three of the best dining-out experiences you’ve had?  I have no idea, probably one of our trips to Ruth Chris’s, but beyond that, I don’t know.

What’s your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? wine cooler

Favorite cookbook/s? The New Basics by Russo and Lukin - I LOVE it!

Got any favorite food blogs? Nope.

What’s the next thing you’ll eat? lunch!  and I’m hungry!

Anyone else want to make a stab at it?

Thanksgiving means giving thanks

Posted in Meme at 1:47 pm by Meg

I’ve never done one of those weekly, sort-of meme things where you following a format each week, and I’ve been thinking that it might be fun to try one.  But rather than getting myself into something long-term and then not following through, I thought I’d try this one (with modifications) that I found.

So, with my modifications, the idea is to post each Thursday during November five things that I am thankful for.

1.  That the election was decisive and now as a country we can move on.  I really feared another election that would end in recounts and bitterness.

2.   That my oldest child is doing okay.  He’s making the adjustment to college life and handling dealing with the Crohns.  I miss him, but we chat through Facebook a few times a week, so he’s not out of our life entirely.

3. That my youngest child hasn’t caused me to strangle her yet.  LOL - I love that she has a high opinion of herself, and I hate trying to be a mother to a child with such a high opinion of herself.

4. my friends.  Who, no matter how different our views are on so many things, still value our friendship.  Who I can depend on when my life gets crazy and will not worry about asking the same from me.

5.  And most importantly for my Hubby.  Who has known me far longer than anyone outside my sisters (and they left home by the time I was ten, so while technically longer - they haven’t really known me in a day-to-day way in 35 years.) and I still enjoy every minute I have with him.

Come back next Thursday for 5 more.

Whoooo are you? Who who who who

Posted in Meme at 12:05 am by Meg

Interestingly, in the last couple of days I’ve seen a few different bloggers comment that they feel like the number of people that are reading their blogs is dropping.

More than one has wondered if it is their political views which is causing the drop.

(Now I know for me, I’m reading more of my regulars through a reader, so you may not “see” me on your stat counters, but I am still out there.)

But with that in mind, I’m calling for a de-lurking week from now until Saturday evening.  Join me if you want (or not) but I’m going to make an effort to make at least one comment on every blog that I read at least semi-regularly that makes a post during the week. (so, if you don’t post between now and Saturday, I may not comment).

And as a flip side, if you leave me a comment with a link to your blog, I’ll come visit you during the week.

Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
‘Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)

Time for a meme

I was just thinking that I haven’t done a meme in a while.

I’m getting this one from Carrie.

01. What’s the last TV show you saw?
Trublood on HBO.  Having read the books, I was really unhappy with it at first, but it’s growing on me - though I’m still unhappy with some of the changes.

02. What are you wearing at the moment?
Halloween T-shirt (with cats), jeans, and a denim long sleeved button up shirt

03. Who is/was your favorite cartoon character?

04. What is your favorite scent?
umm, horses? or maybe pine trees - I love bringing the smell in the house with Christmas

05. What is your favorite drink?

Probably water, but Coke comes in very close.
