I met Charlene when Boy was entering 8th grade. One of the local groups (an hour plus away from us) was having a used book sale with a small one day conference. (At this point I had never been to a conference because the only one I was familiar with was the ultra Christian one in Indy). Two friends and I went.
What ended up being a high point of the day was the talk about homeschooling through high school and into college. Charlene gave the talk. Up to that point I was going into panic mode trying to figure out how to ‘do’ high school and what would be required when applying to college. I don’t think it answered every question and concern that I had, but it started me down the road that this week ended.
Charlene founded and directs the Indiana Foundation for Home Schooling. Their main cause is helping homeschool families get a handle on high school. A few years ago they started their own one day conference that only deals with high school. And today Charlene posted the information for this year’s conference.
So I’m passing it along with my recommendation.

Hello!
Please mark your calendar and share with your support group and
friends - Map Your Future, a high school, college, and career
planning event for 7th-12th graders and their parents will be on
Friday, October 10th.
In past years this event has been the 3rd Friday of September. So,
please note it has moved to Friday, October 10th. The location will
remain as the past 2 years — we are blessed to be back at Chapel
Rock Christian Church on Indy’s westside.
The high school coordinators from HSLDA will be returning again this
year with some new classes and repeats from last year — as there is
just so much to cover in a day devoted to high school, college, and
career planning! There will be lots of additional sessions by other
speakers too — including plenty for your teens. We are working on
constantly improving the options for teen classes.
If you have suggestions while we are designing the additional
classes, we would love to hear from you! Email us:
Info@IndianaHomeSchooling.org
Details will be available probably in mid-July on the Indiana
Foundation for Home Schooling (IFHS) website.
Thanks!
Charlene Brown

I remember growing up and singing Dancing Queen in my bedroom with my friends using hairbrushes and whatever else was available as microphones. Image what fun it was to see the musical Mamma Mia this past year and watch them do that on the stage.
It was corny, but enjoyable fun. I will admit that I’m looking forward to the movie.
And now I find out there’s a chance to recreate that Dancing Queen experience, as part of the movie lead-up Pond’s is running a contest for woman over 40 (yep, that’s me!) and two friends to audition as a real-life Donna and the Dynamos.
The winning trio get to go to London for the world premier of the movie!
To enter you need to either make it to NYC on April 28 to audition live, or send them a video of the three of you by April 30.
I don’t have the guts to actually do, but it you do, let me know and I’ll vote for your video!

We did Book-It for years while the kids were little. In fact there was a group of us that would go to lunch together each month for the kids to cash in their certificates.
Anyway, they’ve changed the rules for next year and now instead of signing up by groups, they want everyone to sign up separately.

Any high school aged kids want a chance to get published?
Sylvan Dell Publishing is hosting a 2nd annual Picture Book Writing Competition for Homeschooled Students!
Sylvan Dell owners, Lee and Donna German, homeschooled their three daughters and, inspired by their own experience, wish to continue nurturing creative freedom among homeschooled students. This competition is open to any homeschooled student at the high school level. The winning author will receive $200 and serious consideration for publication.
Students wishing to submit manuscripts should follow the submissionguidelines posted on the Sylvan Dell Web site. Here’s a brief summary of the guidelines:
Eligibility: Homeschooled students working at a high school level.
Manuscripts should subtly convey an educational theme through warm, engaging story. Sylvan Dell’s current catalog focuses on teaching science and math through literature.
Manuscripts should be written for one of the following age ranges: 3 to 7, 4 to 8, 5 to 9, or 6 to 10. Authors should be mindful of age-appropriate words.
Manuscripts should not exceed 1,500 words. Picture books are typically less than 1,000 words, so novels and short stories will not be considered. As this is a writing competition, illustrations will not be accepted.
Electronic submission only. Manuscripts must be attached to an e-mail message as a Word document. Submission e-mails should be sent only to MaggieStuart between March 1 and March 31, 2008, with “Homeschool Writing Contest Submission”; and the manuscript title in the subject line. Students must include their name, date of birth and contact information in the e-mail. Do your children qualify? Read the complete submission guidelines to find out!

My sister, P, sent this to me and I thought I’d pass it on. This release doesn’t say explicitly that you have to be a college student, so an older teen might want to look into it if they are into wild horses.
WILD HORSE BEHAVIOR INTERNSHIP
*From* January through May 2008 at Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina.**
*Work* is 40 hours per week, with an average of two field and three office days per week. Wild horses are monitored for location, band members, and behavior. Pregnancy determination by dung is performed in January. Yearlings are removed with veterinary sedation; contraception is delivered remotely to selected mares. Database and photography work, plus varied activities pertaining to wild horse management, fill the office time.
This internship further qualifies the intern for jobs in wildlife, parks and recreation, resource or equine management. Past interns have gone on to veterinary school, law school, and to employment with wild horses at the North Carolina Rachel Carson Reserve.
*Housing, *furnished, adjacent to the offices and Visitor Center, is included.
*Stipend *eligibility is possible* i*f the intern is enrolled as a half-time student (as defined by the university).
*Credit* may be obtained for the internship if the student’s university recognizes internships and if the student completes the university requirements.
*Position* is open until a candidate is accepted.

Last week our local homeschooling group went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to see a special exhibit - 2000 year old (approximately) sculptures from Rome. These sculptures are from the Louvre and this tour is the first time in about 200 years that they have been on display somewhere else. They are going to be in Indy until January 6th and then I think they are going to Seattle.

We set up the tour as a school group and when we left, the museum gave us 4 free passes for each person to come back.
Well, that’s all great for brick and mortar school trips, but when homeschoolers are already coming through with their whole families - they don’t need that many spare tickets. For example, the three of us came home with 12 free passes!
And I’ve spent the last week offering the spare passes to anyone local who wants them. I still have our free passes left.

So, I thought I’d raffle them off here - of course you have to be within distance to get to Indianapolis to use them - I can’t do much about that.

So, if you are interested: Read the rest of this entry »

If so, Quaker Chewy Granola Bars is looking to build a commercial around you.
This is from Jane Brody, Professor of Acting at The Theatre School at DePaul University and author of The Sport of Auditioning.
I am a casting director currently working to finding children who participate in volunteering efforts with their parents to appear in a Quaker Chewy Granola Bars Commercial.
We are looking for children between the ages of 6-9 and their Moms and/or Dads who work together to help others. These children must eat Quaker Chewy Bars as well as volunteer.
We don’t have big cattle calls, so the initial contact with us is simply a phone call where we do a short interview. If we feel that the family is right for us, we then schedule an appointment to be seen over the weekend. The actual audition appointment takes no more than about 15 minutes.
Would you please take the time to think about this? Any family will be very, very well compensated. We are not looking for actors, we create our commercials based on the people we interview. These are essentially little documentary spots. Any one who wants more information can call me at our toll-free 1 866-9QUAKER (978-2537).
